Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the developments in Bolivia
On 20 October, the Bolivians voted in elections whose process raised legitimate doubts regarding its transparency and credibility, causing civil unrest and international concern. The Organisation of American States (OAS) Election Observation Mission in its preliminary report severely questioned the process and the Government of Bolivia invited an OAS binding audit.
The publication today of the OAS audit report confirmed several shortcomings that put in question the integrity of the announced results. As indicated in the audit conclusions and previously stated by the OAS and the European Union, a new election with a renewed and independently appointed electoral authority is necessary to restore trust and credibility in the Bolivian democratic system.
