Peru: Statement by the Spokesperson following the parliamentary elections
On 26 January, Peruvian citizens cast their vote to elect the 130 members of the Congress of the Republic. These were the first early parliamentary elections in the country's history. The elections were organised after dissolution of the Congress, in the context of heated institutional debates, including on anti-corruption reform. The organisation of these elections demonstrated Peru's commitment to resolve its institutional and political challenges through democratic means.
In line with the EU's long-standing commitment to supporting credible, transparent and inclusive elections in Peru, an EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) was deployed from 30 December 2019 to follow the electoral process.
